Roman black leather belt manually assembled by our craftsmen in Yute crea, is composed of a skirt of 6 strips made of high quality bovine leather in black leather 4cm wide at a height of 38 cm and adorned with silver studs all along and topped at the ends by a lion's head. The Roman soldiers or legionaries used to wear the decorated skirt which, with the movement, produced a characteristic sound, which identified the presence of the soldier.

The Roman belt itself is composed of two pieces joined and riveted together, it is 4cm wide and closes with a matching buckle in silver tones. The cingulum or belt was a piece used in Ancient Rome to hold the garments. The cingulum militare was the belt of the Roman army, a way to differentiate themselves from the people of Rome when the soldiers were not wearing the uniform or armor. The belt was a very important part of the uniform, not only to girdle the tunic, but also because it helped to hold the gladius or Roman sword and, if it had one, the pugio or dagger.

The lion has been present in myths and legends of Greeks and Romans, it is a symbol of power, leadership and majesty, not in vain is the king of animals. For the Romans this animal had a special attraction so much that when there were no lions in Europe they would bring them from Mespopotamia and Libya and with them an endless number of wild animals from different parts of their conquered lands such as tigers, leopards, wild boars or bears to make shows in the arena of the Roman circus. In Ancient Rome they would also be used to pull chariots in the parades of the Roman victors.

That is why the lion, as well as the eagle and the wolf are figures that cannot be missing in Roman iconography. This Roman soldier's belt or cingulum militare of black leather with lions dyed by hand is a piece of craftsmanship that can be worn both with a basic tunic as a soldier in rest season and with the set of the lorica to go ready for battle.

The black leather pieces that make up this Roman belt are hand dyed by our Yute team, so there will be differences in the treatment of aging in each piece. If the exact color of the leather is important for your historical reenactment outfit, please contact us to know the shade of the current stock of the product.
